The most common approach here is to install sill trim at the soffits rip down the top course of siding and crimp the siding so the sill trim holds it in place.
It s especially affordable when it placed over existing siding because the labor of removing the old siding is not needed.
The cement board panels are fastened to the battens.
The wrb is lapped over the head flashing or the flashing is taped.
The head flashing is installed in a bed of caulking onto the top of the window frame.
I guess it s a new trade since they nail exterior trim over the siding with 7 16 gaps.
V joint or 45 degree shiplap is a little trickier.
This works fine most of the time but always add a few blobs of caulking inside the bottom lip of the top course for extra security.
It takes a lot of talent to make sure you don t shoot to much caulk inside the trim and they et caulk it perfectly flush with the trim using a special technique.
Follow your window door manufacturer s installation instructions for caulking guidance between window and trim.
The main difference in the installation instructions from glancing through them both is that the hz10 product is permitted to have the trim installed over the siding while the hz5 product is not.

The first is your moving the siding of the house about 3 4 of an inch outward.
Apply caulking compounds rated for exterior use when caulking window trim.
On tight gap there s no tongue so face nailing is the only option.

In the old days the builder would install the trim bring the siding up to it and caulk the corner.
At the top we install a trim piece either crown molding or a flat stop to close the gap.
Trim boards that sit on top the siding.
If the trim is being applied over the hardi panels.
There are a few things that you ll need to know when doing this however.
On most new homes the trim goes up after the siding is installed which creates a large gap that should not be caulked.

While tight gap siding can be installed from the top down we usually run it from the bottom up.
During my time working for james hardie i very rarely got calls from homeowners that wanted to submit a warranty claim for their hardie siding.
